Many of us are profoundly connected to music. It moves us, uplifts us, and engenders powerful emotions within us. But though music can have multiple benefits for our bodies and minds (like relieving stress, and reducing pain) what frequency such music is tuned to is more important than you might think. To coincide with the release of the Frequency section of our app, we wanted to shed some light on this topic, by breaking down the history, science and healing power of Solfeggio frequencies.

    What are Solfeggio Frequencies?

Solfeggio frequencies are specific tones of sound that have a variety of healing properties, and each frequency promotes unique aspects of body and mind health. Reputed to date back to ancient history, Solfeggio frequencies are famously attributed to early Gregorian chants, but some contest they originate further back, most notably in Indian Sanskrit chants.

    History of Solfeggio Frequencies

Though the use of the frequencies themselves may date further back, the story of Solfeggio originates with the 11th-century monk, Guido D'Arezzo. D’Arezzo is famed for having devised the vocal note scale (do, re, mi, fa, so, la ,ti, do) known as “solfège” to aid in the teaching of Gregorian chants and hymns. Solfeggio frequencies were used in ancient Gregorian chants like (The Hymn of St John the Baptist) and were thought to have been lost to history until they were rediscovered in the 1970s by Dr Joseph Puleo.

Dr Joseph Puleo was a neuropathic physician and one of America's leading herbalists. Using mathematical numerical reduction, he identified six measurable tones that corresponded with the ancient Solfeggio scale.

Puleo identified 6 tones that each corresponded to a colour and hertz frequency, and found each frequency had its own unique quality, and he deciphered them as follows:

UT – 396 Hz – Liberating fear and guilt.
RE – 417 Hz – Undoing Situations / Facilitating Change.
MI – 528 Hz – Transformation and miracles (DNA Repair). Derives from the phrase “MI-ra gestorum”, meaning “miracle” in Latin. Claimed to be the exact frequency used by genetic biochemists to repair broken DNA – the genetic blueprint upon which life is based.
    FA – 639 Hz – Connecting/Relationships.
    SOL – 741 Hz – Awakening intuition
LA – 852 Hz – Returning to a spiritual order

Pueleo theorized that these Solfeggio frequencies could be profoundly healing for the conscious and subconscious mind, and, in the last several decades since Puleo’s discovery, further research has revealed evidence that supports the healing potential of Solfeggio frequencies.

In 1988, biochemist Dr. Glen Rein tested the impact of different kinds of music on human DNA. What he discovered confirmed what the ancients no doubt knew all too well. When he tested the Gregorian and Sanskrit chants he saw that these had the most positive effect, increasing UV light absorption between 5 to 9 percent (UV light absorption being an essential function of healthy DNA).

Conversely, he found that rock music decreased UV light absorption, harming DNA. Rein’s research showed that sound frequencies do have a serious impact, for better or worse, on our health and wellbeing.

Since Rein’s incredible discovery, further research has shown Solfeggio frequencies can indeed exert positive mental, emotional, and physical effects. This 2019 study concluded that:

“Sound healing can successfully be used as therapy for PTSD, anxiety and physical illness. Tuning into specific significant frequencies can assist with combating man-made Electromagnetic Frequencies that cause disease, disharmony and amplifying negativity.”

But why do Solfeggio frequencies have such a positive impact on our health? The answer lies with the Schumann resonance.

Earth’s heartbeat - the Schumann Resonance

In 1952, physicist Winfred Otto Schumann documented the electromagnetic resonances between the ionosphere and the surface of the Earth. He found that the electromagnetic waves resonated at a low frequency ranging between 7.86 Hz to 8 Hz. This was, in his opinion, the Earth’s heartbeat. The fact the eminent physicist shares his last name with the great 19th-century German composer, Robert Schumann is a fitting coincidence!

Otto Schumann's successor, Herbert König, took the research a step further. After studying the connection between Schumann resonances, when he compared EEG recordings with the Earth's electromagnetic field, he found they matched different levels of human brain activity.

Konig found that the resonances matched the five key brainwave states: Alpha, Beta, Delta, Gamma and Theta. The different brainwave states correspond to different activities from sleeping to creating to learning.

Furthermore, recent research supports this connection and this 2003 study concluded that the Schumann resonance provided synchronization for higher brain function.

But what has this got to do with Solfeggio frequencies?

How the Schumann resonance relates to Solfeggio frequencies

The reason Solfeggio frequencies have their positive qualities is that they resonate in harmony with the Schumann resonance of 8H. From a musical standpoint, they derive from 8Hz and work up the musical scale, octave by octave until the C note is vibrating at 256Hz and the A note at 432Hz. Music tuned to harmonize with this frequency is called “scientific tuning”.

    The Solfeggio frequencies Envol uses

You’ll be pleased to know that we’ve just introduced a “Frequency” section to the Envol app. Each audio track is our own original creation and tuned to a specific Solfeggio frequency that has its own unique healing properties. Below are 3 examples taken from our Frequency tracks.

    Pain Relief - 174Hz
Ease into the musical swells and gentle rain of this healing frequency. The lowest on the Solfeggio scale, the 174 Hz frequency offers pain relief by relaxing the muscles, thereby relieving tension and stress.

    Conclusion

Though we can easily forget, nothing in life is static—everything is oscillating, vibrating, resonating. Frequencies are quite literally the foundation of the universe, and, as science has shown, tuning into certain ones can provide a variety of benefits. We urge you to explore Solfeggio frequencies for yourself, and experience their myriad health benefits.
